Do you Know How to Deal with Common Failures of Solenoid Valves?

I believe everyone is no stranger to solenoid valves. Today, we will introduce in detail the principle, classification and troubleshooting skills of solenoid valves. If you want to know about tri clamp sanitary fittings or stainless steel ball float valves, you can check out our other articles.

What Is a Solenoid Valve

Solenoid valve is an automation basic component used to control fluid. It belongs to actuator and is not limited to hydraulic and pneumatic. Different solenoid valves play a role in different positions of the control system. The most commonly used ones are check valves, safety valves, directional control valves, and speed control valves. In principle, solenoid valves are divided into three categories: direct-acting, stepwise direct-acting, and pilot-operated. Solenoid valves can be used in hydrostatic drive systems and automatic transmission hydraulic systems.

How to Deal with the Malfunction of the Solenoid Valve?

The rated voltages of solenoid valve coils are DC12V, DC24V, AC24V (50/60Hz), AC110V (50/60Hz), AC220V (50/60Hz), and AC380V (50/60Hz). Generally, either AC220V or DC24V is used in electrical design. AC220V does not need to install a switching power supply, so it has low cost, simple wiring and easy maintenance. DC24V is a commonly used safety voltage, and its switching power supply and solenoid valve coils are easy to maintain and replace. During the replacement process, we also need to check some other accessories, such as copper compression fittings or hydraulic socket weld fittings.

Common Faults and Treatment Methods of Solenoid Valves

Coil Short Circuit or Open Circuit

First, we use a multi-meter to measure its continuity. If the resistance is close to zero or infinity, it means that the coil is short-circuited or open. If the resistance measured is normal (about tens of ohms), it still does not mean that the coil is good. We need to perform the following final test. We can find a small screwdriver and place it near the metal rod that passes through the solenoid valve coil, and then energize the solenoid valve. If the direction of the screwdriver is offset, the solenoid valve coil is good, otherwise it is bad. In this case, we only need to replace the solenoid valve coil. It should be noted that if we do not have a multi-meter, we cannot use a digital pressure meter or digital gauge, but a special current and voltage meter.

Spool Problem

When the pressure of the medium through the solenoid valve is normal, we can press the red manual button of the solenoid valve. If the solenoid valve has no response (the pressure medium does not change on-off), the spool may be broken. Faced with this problem, we first need to check whether there is a problem with the medium, such as whether there is a lot of water in the compressed air and whether there are many impurities in the liquid medium. Then we should remove the water or impurities in the solenoid valve and pipeline. If it does not work anymore, please repair or replace the valve core, or replace the entire solenoid valve.

There will be another situation. After inspection, the magnetism is normal when the coil is energized, but the solenoid valve still does not operate, indicating that the spool is broken. Please repair or replace the spool, or simply replace the entire solenoid valve.

As for the maintenance of the solenoid valve body, because there are too many types, the various maintenance methods will not be repeated. You can consult us for accessories related to this series, such as a hydraulic hose adapter or hydraulic ball.
